Job Description
SRON is seeking a research scientist to lead its newly established Data Science Team. This initiative applies data science techniques to enable audacious astrophysics from space missions across the full mission lifecycle, from concept and calibration to operations, pipelines, and scientific interpretation. The team runs an interdisciplinary program that develops and applies advanced algorithms, statistical and machine-learning methods, and modelling tools. It also coordinates the Science Accelerator Hub, a framework for open, reproducible tools and collaboration that increases the scientific return of space missions.
As Team Lead, you will help shape the strategy, culture, and composition of this group at the center of SRON's mission to bring science into space. You will define and guide the team’s scientific vision in close collaboration with scientists at SRON, across the Dutch astronomy community, and with international partners. Initial resources are available to build the core team, and the team is expected to grow through targeted recruitment.
Your main responsibility is to lead the research team that connects data science and astrophysics within SRON’s mission portfolio and the wider national strategy. This includes growing the team, fostering collaboration across SRON’s Programmes, and guiding the Science Accelerator Hub development . You will carry out research, develop data-science tools and pipelines with teams at SRON and across the Netherlands, pursue funding, support team members’ career development, and serve on the Astrophysics Management Team.
We welcome applicants with leadership experience or clear leadership potential. Candidates should have a PhD and experience applying advanced data-science methods to complex scientific problems. Experience or potential in inclusive collaboration and in grant writing is expected. Strong English communication skills and the ability to work independently and in diverse teams are essential.
Compensation and Benefits
The position we offer at SRON is full-time (negotiable), permanent or permanent-track in which you will be employed by NWO-I, The Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research Institutes. The salary range mentioned is gross per month on a full-time basis.
