Job Description

A postdoctoral position is available in the Astrophysics Group, University College London.  The successful applicant will be working with Professor Richard Ellis and his research group.

Professor Ellis holds an ERC Advanced Grant whose main goal is to improve our understanding of when cosmic reionisation occurred, as well as to determine the role that early galaxies played in driving this process. The programme is primarily observational and uses spectrographs on large ground and space-based telescopes to address the nature of the ionising radiation in distant galaxies. A major initiative in the group is preparing for exploitation of the James Webb Space telescope due for launch in 2021.

The successful applicant will take the lead in planning, executing and analysing the necessary spectroscopic and imaging observations of faint galaxies. She/he will work alongside other researchers in Professor Ellis’ group including members undertaking numerical simulations and radiative transfer calculations to interpret the observations, and will interact with other research faculty members with interests in cosmology, gravitational lensing and galaxy evolution including Filipe Abdalla, Benjamin Joachimi, Ofer Lahav, Andrew Pontzen, Hiranya Peiris and Amelie Saintonge.

The post is available starting 1 October 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter, and is funded until 30 September 2021 in the first instance. An additional year of funding beyond September 2021 may be available, but is not guaranteed at this stage.
