Postdoctoral position: Stars and Clusters

The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellowship working with Dr. Andrea Dupree within the Solar, Stellar, and Planetary Sciences Division (SSP) and other collaborators. The purpose of the position is to conduct theoretical and observational research relating to optical and infrared spectroscopic studies of stars and star clusters.  Topics include stellar populations, stellar compositions, mass accretion processes, and mass loss processes. 

Candidates must hold a Ph.D degree in astronomy, physics, or a related subject by the appointment start.  It is expected that the successful candidate will (a) design and carry out optical or infrared spectroscopic observations at the Magellan telescopes in Chile, the MMT and  Whipple Observatory in Arizona (b) reduce and interpret stellar UV/optical/infrared spectra  (c) use and/or develop appropriate software for analysis as necessary.  The candidate should demonstrate experience in acquiring and analyzing stellar spectra.  Experience with radiative transfer (non-LTE, 3D), atomic and molecular data is advantageous.

The candidate is expected to work well independently and cooperatively and communicate the results of her/his research both orally and in writing. This Fellowship is for two years with the possibility of renewal for an additional year based upon performance, mutual satisfaction, and funding.  This position may begin with teleworking until the pandemic abates.  We offer full medical and dental benefits and a stipend commensurate with the cost of living in Cambridge, MA.
