Job Description
The University of Sydney welcomes applicants for one PhD scholarship on Asteroseismology of intermediate- and high-mass stars to work with Dr. May Gade Pedersen. This opportunity is a part of an ARC-funded project, led by Dr. Pedersen, which aims to address the following key questions: a) how does interior mixing and angular momentum transport depend on mass, age, and metallicity; b) why do some stars pulsate while others do not; and c) can asteroseismology distinguish between single star and binary star evolution products? The PhD candidate will be working towards answering these questions together Dr. Pedersen as a part of their PhD project.
The selected PhD candidate will be offered a 3-year PhD scholarship with a possible 6-month extension.
Expected start date is January 2026.
Compensation and Benefits
The stipend from the scholarship is tax-free (not subject to income tax) and there are no tuition fees (these are also covered by the scholarship).
Application Details
Please note that applicants do *not* have to already have an unconditional offer of admission or currently be enrolled to study in a Masters by Research or PhD within the Faculty of Science at the University of Sydney to apply. Instead, once a PhD candidate has been selected they will be asked to apply for admission to the PhD program after which the scholarship will be offered.
Applicants are expected to either currently hold or will hold prior to the start date of the PhD scholarship at least an Honours degree (First Class or Second Class Upper) or Masters degree or equivalent. Additionally, the PhD candidate should have a background in physics, astronomy, or equivalent. No prior knowledge of asteroseismology is required.
Applicants will be asked to provide:
- Academic transcripts
- Curriculum vitae including contact details for two referees who will be willing to provide reference letters/reports.
- Area of study and research proposal (1-2 pages). This should be a summary of your research experience (such as a summary of your Honours or Master's thesis) and interests.
