LMU-Munich LSST Postdoctoral Research Associates

Applications are invited for two postdoctoral appointments in the Cosmology and Structure Formation group of the Faculty of Physics at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitaet (LMU-Munich). The successful applicant will be expected to evenly split their time between (1) pursuing their own studies in extragalactic astronomy and cosmology using existing data from the Dark Energy Survey, the South Pole Telescope and the eROSITA X-ray survey and (2) preparing for science with the upcoming Rubin Observatory LSST survey through the development and testing of algorithms and software needed to pursue cosmological studies using clusters and weak lensing within the context of the Dark Energy Science Collaboration (DESC). The new team members will work closely with Prof. Mohr and Dr. Bocquet and their research group at LMU as well as with collaborators within other DESC clusters and weak lensing teams around the world. Members of our LMU-Munich research group are focused on multiwavelength studies of galaxy clusters, galaxies and AGN using data from MeerKAT radio surveys, SPT mm-wave surveys, the eROSITA X-ray survey and the DES optical survey, and they are making contributions to software and algorithm development in those projects as well as in Euclid. Munich offers a rich environment for astrophysics and cosmology, with groups pursuing a wide range of topics at the LMU and also at MPA, MPE and ESO in Garching.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in astronomy or physics. Demonstrated skill in algorithm and tool development and experience with collaborative software development will be a benefit. Each two year position is available as of 1. September, 2021. These are research positions at the German E13 salary scale, and they are open to all qualified individuals, regardless of nationality. German language skills are not required. The initial appointments will have the possibility of extensions, pending good progress and availability of funding.
