Postdoctoral position on the Lyman-alpha forest and high-redshift observations
Job Summary
Heidelberg
Germany
Job Description
Applications are invited for a 3-year (2+1) postdoctoral position at the University of Heidelberg as part of Dr Sarah Bosman's Frontier research group.
The group conducts observational research on the topics of large-scale structure, reionisation and the intergalactic medium, the origins of the first supermassive black holes, the first galaxies, and cosmic metal enrichment using absorption line spectroscopy. In particular, we are leading the GHOSTLy collaboration, which is obtaining a large sample of high-resolution quasar spectra at 4.5<z<5.5 with the GHOST spectrograph on Gemini. Collaboration memberships include Euclid, MOSAIC, EREBUS and COSMOS-3D, which the successful applicant will have the opportunity of joining. The successful applicant will also have the opportunity to supervise Master student thesis projects within the research group.
The ideal candidate would work on observations of the Lyman-alpha forest with GHOSTLy and related quasar spectroscopic datasets. They will also be expected to help prepare and execute observational projects on large astronomical facilities. Proficiency with quasar spectroscopy, IGM physics and/or observational experience will therefore be particularly appreciated. However, this position is not strictly project-based, and candidates with experience in any of the topics covered by the research group are also warmly encouraged to apply.
