Job Description

The Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS) team at Penn State University invites applications for a postdoctoral scholar to conduct science studies relating to the Chandra X-ray Observatory. The successful applicant will be encouraged to pursue their research program with one or more research groups studying: X-ray/multiwavelength cosmic surveys and AGN astrophysics (led by W. Niel Brandt); flaring from young stars and their impact on planetary systems (Konstantin Getman and Eric Feigelson); and emission from isolated neutron stars and related objects (George Pavlov). The scientist will have some data analysis duties but will be largely free to pursue group and independent research. They are expected to publish exciting science based on ACIS data and propose for new Chandra observations. They will have access to new Chandra Guaranteed Time Observations in addition to the substantial satellite data archive. The scientist can benefit from the department’s strong multiwavelength observational programs ranging from millimeter through gamma-ray regimes. The start time will be August-September 2023. Ancillary funds for research expenses such as travel, publication costs, and undergraduate assistant will be available.

Applicants should have a Ph.D. in Astronomy, Physics, or related field prior to the start date.
