Job Description

We invite applications for a Prize Postdoctoral Fellowship in Theoretical Astrophysics at the Department of Astronomy, University of Maryland, College Park. Established in 2006, this independent postdoctoral program is connected with the Maryland Astronomy Center for Theory and Computation (CTC), whose faculty maintain active research programs in planetary/solar-system dynamics, exoplanet atmospheres, galaxy formation, cosmology, and high-energy astrophysics.

While we typically encourage applications related to any of these areas, for this cycle, preference will be given to candidates with a background in cosmology, galaxy formation, or high-energy astrophysics. You must have obtained a PhD in astronomy, physics, or a related field by the start date of the appointment in the fall of 2023. The initial appointment will be for two years, with the possibility of an extension to three years.

To apply, please submit an online application by December 15th, 2022. We ask for a cover letter, CV, publication list, and a 3-page statement of research interests and experience (optionally with up to two more pages for references and figures). Candidates must also arrange for three letters of recommendation to be sent via the same application form. We may consider applicants for other postdoctoral positions in the Astronomy Department at Maryland. For further information, please contact Prof. Benedikt Diemer at the email address listed below.

Offers of employment are contingent on completion of a background check. A prior criminal conviction or convictions will not automatically disqualify a finalist from employment in the position.

All students, faculty, and staff are required to be vaccinated against COVID. Proof of full vaccination will be required before the start of employment in order to work at any University of Maryland location.

The University of Maryland, College Park, an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer, complies with all applicable federal and state laws and regulations regarding nondiscrimination and affirmative action; all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment. The University is committed to a policy of equal opportunity for all persons and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, physical or mental disability, protected veteran status, age, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, creed, marital status, political affiliation, personal appearance, or on the basis of rights secured by the First Amendment, in all aspects of employment, educational programs and activities, and admissions
