Job Description
Tartu Observatory invites applications for a PhD position focused on studying galaxies and galaxy groups in cosmological voids using data primarily from the ongoing J-PAS survey, under the supervision by Prof. Antti Tamm (University of Tartu) and Prof. Rien van de Weijgaert (Kapteyn Astronomical Institute, NL).
The results of the study will contribute to a better understanding of the physical processes shaping galaxy formation and evolution, including the interplay between dark matter and dark energy in different environments and at different stages of cosmic evolution.
This fully funded (gross/net salary 2100/1800 Euros per month), four-year position is intended for candidates with a background in astrophysics, mathematics, computer science or similar field and experience in working with datasets using Python, R or similar programming language.
The successful candidate must hold an MSc degree, or equivalent, by the expected start date of September 1 st 2026. The admitted doctoral researcher will be employed as a Junior Research Fellow at the University of Tartu and is offered a gross salary 2100 Euros (1730 Euros net) per month.
Tartu Observatory, an institute of the University of Tartu, is the main centre for astrophysical research in Estonia and a broader North-East area of Europe and is located a 40-minute bus (20-minute car) ride from Tartu, Estonia’s second-largest city. Tartu Observatory is a member of the J-PAS (http://www.j-pas.org) and the 4MOST (https://www.4most.eu/cms/) consortia. Tartu offers a vibrant international environment. The University of Tartu, founded in 1632, is the largest and oldest university in Estonia, hosting ~15,000 students actively participating in research from Arts and Humanities to Science and Technology and producing over 100 PhD degrees annually.
