Faculty Positions in Astronomy, National Tsing Hua University, Taiwan
Job Summary
Hsinchu,
Taiwan
Job Description
The Institute of Astronomy (IoA) at National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in astronomy and astrophysics at all academic ranks. Candidates are expected to develop a competitive research program with potential for international recognition and leadership, and to teach at both undergraduate and graduate levels. Post-Ph.D. research and teaching experience is preferred.
Research at NTHU/IoA spans high-energy astrophysics, gravitational waves, galactic archaeology, galaxy clusters, cosmology, star and planet formation, exoplanets, and astrochemistry. Faculty use major facilities (ALMA, Chandra, DESI, HST, JWST, etc.) and perform cutting-edge numerical and MHD simulations from supernovae to galaxy clusters. IoA is an active member of LIGO and KAGRA and participates in ARRAKIHS, VERTECS, and Twinkle missions. Instrumentation projects include: Gamma-ray Transients Monitor (GTM, to be launched on TASA’s Formosat-8B), Gamma-ray Polarimeter and Monitor (GPM, on TASA’s Formosat-8D), Compton Spectrometer and Imager (COSI, a NASA SMEX program led by UCB/SSL), Formosa Lunar UV Telescope Experiment (FLUTE, to fly on a TASA’s lunar mission), and Bustling Universe Radio Survey Telescope in Taiwan (BURSTT) dedicated to FRBs. For computational support, IoA operates the CICA cluster, an on-site HPC facility open to faculty and students (see https://github.com/nthu-ioa/cluster/wiki/Cluster-Specification for specs). IoA is also part of the Taiwan Astronomical Research Alliance (TARA), a forerunner to the planned National Observatory.
Starting salary is determined by post-PhD research experience. For an assistant professor, the base monthly salary is NT$83,720, with increments for each year of post-PhD research. NTHU offers two performance-based bonuses: (1) a general performance bonus of ~NT$10,000–35,000+ per month, and (2) the Tsing Hua Talent Development Fund, awarded to about one-third of faculty, ranging from NT$30,000 to NT$1,000,000 annually. Candidates may also apply for the Yu-Shan Scholarship from the Ministry of Education, providing up to NT$1.5 million additional salary per year; all three of our most recent hires received this award.
