Job Description

The Department of Physics & Astronomy at the University of Utah invites applications for a postdoctoral research position to work with Prof. Qi Feng in the gamma-ray astronomy program. As part of our research group, you will have the opportunity to work on cutting-edge projects in the areas of high-energy gamma-ray astronomy, multi-messenger astronomy, astroparticle physics, and the development of next-generation gamma-ray instrumentation.

  • Lead projects related to the scientific and technological development of the Schwarzschild-Couder Telescope of the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory (CTAO), including simulations, data analysis, machine learning implementation, and optical alignment.
  • Lead research projects in the areas of gamma-ray and multi-messenger astronomy, including but not limited to studies of active galactic nuclei and searches for high-energy neutrino sources, using data from VERITAS gamma-ray telescopes and CTAO, as well as from space telescopes such as Fermi, Swift, NuSTAR, and XMM. Pursuits of independent research interests in these areas are encouraged.
  • Collaborate with local and external researchers in gamma-ray, X-ray, optical, and neutrino astronomy and astroparticle physics.
  • Participate in service work as a member of the CTA and VERITAS collaborations (e.g., observing shifts).

  • A doctoral degree in Physics, Astronomy, or a related discipline by the start date is required.
  • Proven track record of research excellence, preferably in gamma-ray, X-ray, or multi-messenger astronomy, particle physics, or machine learning.

Application & Additional Information:

Applicants should send a cover letter, CV, and statement of research interests (2-3 pages) to Dr. Qi Feng at [email protected]. Applicants should also arrange for at least three letters of recommendation to be sent to the same address.

The anticipated start date is in Fall 2024; an earlier start date can be accommodated. The initial appointment is for two years, with the second year contingent on satisfactory performance, and may be extended further based upon funding availability and mutual agreement. Review of applications will begin on Dec 15, 2023, but applications will be accepted until the position is filled.

The University of Utah participates in forefront research in the areas of gamma-ray and X-ray astronomy, ultra-high-energy cosmic-ray physics, neutrino astrophysics, large optical surveys, cosmology, and time-domain astrophysics. The comprehensive research programs provide a competitive, vibrant environment for conducting scientific research.
