Job Description

IRAM is a leading international institute for millimeter wave astronomy, supported by the MPG (Max-Planck Gesellschaft, Germany), CNRS (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, France), and IGN (Instituto Geográfico Nacional, Spain). IRAM operates two major observatories, the NOEMA array located in the French Alps and the Pico Veleta 30-m antenna in southern Spain, and runs an ambitious instrumentation development program.

Job description:

The IRAM receiver group is responsible for the design, construction, and maintenance of the heterodyne receivers installed on the NOEMA and Pico Veleta observatories. It is also providing receiving systems for other observatories world-wide.

The group is composed of more than 15 highly experienced technicians and engineers and has established expertise in:

  • SIS mixers
  • Microwave optics
  • Cryostat assembly
  • Control electronics
  • IF processing
  • Low-noise local oscillators

The laboratories in Grenoble provide advanced equipment, including cryogenic test sets, antenna range, VNA, etc.

Mission:

  • Provide both technical and human leadership to the Receiver group
  • Drive the design, development and deployment of customized receiver systems
  • Oversee maintenance, performance monitoring and continuous improvements of deployed systems
  • Coordinate with other internal teams (software & signal processing, etc.)
  • Initiate and manage international collaborative projects
  • Shape the group’s technical roadmap and maintain project budgets
  • Personally contribute to and steer critical technical developments

 

Required profile :

  • Engineering degree or phD in physics, electrnic engineering, RF or similar
  • Proven experience in receiver system design or leadership (ideally involving RF/ Cryo / sub-mm technologies)
  • Strong skills in radiofrequency technologies, cryogenics, SIS components, microwave optics
  • Background in complex project environments (space, nuclear, scientific instrumentation…)
  • Fluency in English is required, French is a plus (international applicants welcome!)
  • Human leadership and rigorous scientific mindset
  • Highly organized, autonomous and forward-thinking
  • Excellent interpersonal and multicultural communication skills
  • Strong ability to synthesize, mediate and build collaboration (even during internal tensions
