Job Description
Applications are invited for a research scientist appointment in the Cosmology and Structure Formation chair of the Faculty of Physics at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitaet (LMU-Munich). The successful applicant will be expected to lead studies of cosmology and the growth of structure or lead studies of galaxy and AGN evolution using forefront observational datasets and numerical simulations. Our group is centrally involved in the ongoing Euclid mission as well as the 10,000 deg^2 MeerKLASS survey being carried out at the MeerKAT radio observatory in South Africa. Moreover, we are international participants in the Rubin Observatory sky survey. Finally, we have focused on galaxy cluster and weak lensing studies using mm-wave (SPT), X-ray (eROSITA) and optical survey datasets (DES). The new group member will have the opportunity to join and lead projects with these datasets and others. The successful candidate will pursue his/her own research program and will have the opportunity to work closely with PhD and Masters students as well as other postdoctoral scholars and senior scientists in the group.
Candidates must have a Ph.D. in astronomy or physics. The appointment will begin in summer 2026 or thereafter. This is a German civil service position (Beamte/ Akademischer Rat; level A13) open to all qualified individuals, regardless of nationality. This senior research position has a teaching requirement, which is fulfilled by supporting Astrophysics lectures and labs at the Masters and Bachelors level. German language skills are a benefit but are not required. The initial appointment will be made for three years with the possibility of an extension to six years, pending adequate research progress.

Compensation and Benefits
German civil servant benefits for this position include retirement, health care subsidy, family leave and 30 days of vacation annually, among other benefits.
Salary is regulated by the state legislature and depends on years of scientific work experience, which determines one's salary step (Stufe). More information available at

Benefits contributions for retirement, unemployment insurance, etc are largely covered by the state in Beamte positions. Health care costs are covered at 50% level and therefore supplementary health care insurance is responsibility of the employee.
