Job Description
The Department of Physics & Astronomy at Barnard College invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor specializing in Observational, Theoretical or Computational Astronomy/Astrophysics, beginning Fall 2026. Barnard is premier liberal arts college for women in New York City founded in 1888, long affiliated with Columbia University. Barnard’s joint Physics & Astronomy Department works closely with various BC faculty in related STEM disciplines, but also has strong ties to both the CU Physics and CU Astronomy Departments. These Columbia departments offer many opportunities for collaboration across a broad range of partners on & off-campus, including the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, Nevis Labs, the Data Science Institute, the Climate School, the Flatiron Institute’s Center for Computational Astrophysics as well as the American Museum of Natural History. Columbia Astronomy is also a member of the MDM Observatory and the LSST Corporation, and its faculty, research scientists, postdocs and students have access to, and use, a broad range of ground and space-based astronomical facilities.
Candidates must have a PhD in Astronomy, Astrophysics or Physics, and possess a strong research agenda & record of scholarship, as well as a genuine commitment to undergraduate teaching, mentoring, and increasing participation in the discipline.
