Job Description
The Department of Physics at the University of Helsinki is seeking an ambitious postdoctoral researcher to join the Planetary System Research group, and carry out research within the framework of a project entitled "Physico-dynamical population model of near-Earth objects based on data from Rubin, Gaia, and Euclid", funded by the Research Council of Finland (PI: Mikael Granvik). The objective of the project is to develop the tools necessary for the development of next-generation NEO population models as well as the first realization of such a model.
The project includes international collaboration with collaborators in, for example, Sweden, France, and the United States, and provides ample funding for travel and extended visits. The successful applicant will have access to the Finnish national supercomputing center, enjoy a stimulating and international work environment, and is encouraged to develop a unique research profile within the framework set by the research project.
The candidate should have a PhD in planetary science or a closely related field, and, preferably, experience with numerical modeling of asteroid dynamics, development and application of survey debiasing tools, and/or analysis of data from large surveys. In addition, good programming and data-analysis skills, and a demonstrated ability to work both independently and in a team are considered highly advantageous.
The appointment will be for up to 3 years depending on satisfactory performance. The earliest possible start date is September 2024. The starting annual gross salary will be within the range of 47–50 k€ depending on experience and qualifications. The University of Helsinki is an equal-opportunity employer.
Compensation and Benefits
In addition to access to the the Finnish public health system, the job includes comprehensive occupational health care, as well as employer contributions to social security and pensions. Employees also have the right to six weeks of paid vacation per year, paid sick leave, and paid family leave (up to six months for each parent). University housing at below-market rates can be provided for up to two years (subject to availability, with preference given to international applicants).
