Job Description

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position to use the SDSS-IV/MaNGA survey to study the properties of nearby galaxies, particularly decomposing the IFU observations into stellar populations separated by age and metallicity.  Specific projects include studying the relationships between spatially-distinct components such as bulges disks and bars, and obtaining deeper insight into the sequence in which galaxies of different type formed.

Professors Michael Merrifield and Alfonso Aragón-Salamanca hold membership of SDSS-IV, which will allow the researcher working with them in this role to obtain immediate access to the data from the MaNGA project, which has obtained IFU observations of 10,000 nearby galaxies. A relevant PhD (or near to completion of a PhD) is essential, as is previous experience of handling IFU data and modelling the spectral properties of nearby galaxies.

This full time post (36.25 hours per week) is available immediately, with an intent to fill by Spring 2021, and will be offered on a fixed term contract until 30 September 2023. Job share arrangements may also be considered.

Informal enquiries may be addressed to Michael Merrifield ([email protected]). Please note that applications sent directly to this email address will not be accepted. Applicants should complete the online submission form (via the University of Nottingham Jobs website) and attach a copy of their CV, publication list, the names of two referees and a 2-page statement of their research interests and experience.
