Job Description
The Astronomy Department at the Universidad de Concepción (UdeC), Chile, invites applications for two tenure or tenure-track professor positions across all areas of astronomy. Minimum requirements are a Ph.D. in astronomy, engineering, physics, or a closely related field, as well as an established record of excellence in research. Strong commitments to teaching, mentoring, and outreach are highly desirable.
Astronomy Department members are highly international and include 13 faculty, ~12 postdocs, ~50 Ph.D. and Masters students, and ~150 undergraduate students in astronomy. Professors teach only astronomy classes, and typically take one core class per semester. Department members are highly successful at attracting national and international funding. In addition to our own existing computational and instrumentation facilities, Department members have access to 10% of observing time on all telescopes in Chile, membership in large survey-mode experiments (e.g., SDSSV, LSST), and opportunities to participate in upcoming facilities (e.g., LCT , CCAT-Prime).
Current research includes observational and theoretical Galactic and extragalactic astronomy, encompassing planets, stars and cluster formation and evolution, stellar variability, the distance ladder, AGNs, galaxy and galaxy cluster evolution, and gravitational waves. The CePIA radioastronomy laboratory leads instrumentation development and will commission the LCT mm telescope over 2026. The Department seeks to consolidate existing areas, and open new areas which enhance collaborations with related activities at other labs and departments at UdeC, including Physics, Engineering, Data Science and AI, and Oceanography.
UdeC offers long-term stability through competitive salaries, tenured positions, performance and publication bonuses, complemented by comprehensive medical, childcare and pension benefits for families. The University campus is known for its large lush green spaces and architectural style. The city of Concepción, a 50 minute flight from the capital Santiago, is accessible and family-friendly.
The Department of Astronomy is deeply committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive academic community. We strongly encourage applications from women and members of underrepresented groups in physics and astronomy. Our department is dedicated to providing a supportive environment through flexible work policies and active mentorship to ensure the success of all faculty members. The positions are available immediately, and the start date is negotiable. New hires are expected to teach in Spanish within 2 yr; initially classes taught in English will be assigned.
