Job Description

In the framework of the new Cluster of Excellence DYNAVERSE (https://dynaverse.astro.uni-koeln.de/) two postdoctoral positions in the field of star formation are available working with Prof. Peter Schilke and Prof. Gary Fuller.

  1. Tomography: Feeding protoplanetary disks from streamers
This will involve leading the study of the flow of material in the regions where high mass stars are forming, identifying a sample of potential streamers in the ALMAGAL sample of sources, establishing a post-processing framework for existing MHD  simulations to produce synthetic observations, and developing an ML system to constrain the orientation and structure of streamers identified in observations.
  2. Characterising rapid phenomena and their impact in shaping and understanding star and planet formation
This position will focus on monitoring transient events in star formation, leading the study of high-mass disks, characterize their physical and chemical properties and relate those to transient events, comparing the results with physical and chemical models of disk formation, coordinating activities within the project, and the interaction with other project in the Dynaverse Excellence Cluster, and participating in the supervision of master and bachelor student.

DYNAVERSE is a new Cluster of Excellence between the Universities of Cologne and Bonn, the Forschungszentrum Jülich, the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy, the German Aerospace Center and the Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies. It is a world-class hub of expertise in radio astronomy, lab-experiments, simulations, and machine learning / artificial intelligence. Dynaverse brings together researchers from Astrophysics, Computer Science and Mathematics. State-of-the-art research facilities to which our team has priority access combined with the expertise in high-performance computing, and data-analytics will generate new ground-breaking opportunities.
