Job Description

Haverford College invites applications for two Visiting Assistant Professors of Physics and Astronomy.

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Haverford College anticipates the need to hire two Visiting Assistant Professors beginning in the 2026–2027 academic year. These are full-time, benefits-eligible visiting appointments for one year, with the possibility of renewal for a second year contingent on departmental needs, satisfactory performance, and institutional approval. At least one of the two successful candidates must be able to contribute to the department’s astronomy curriculum in addition to being able to contribute to physics teaching. The standard teaching load is the equivalent of five courses across the academic year, typically two courses in one semester and three in the other.

We seek candidates whose expertise complements the department’s strengths and curricular needs. Candidates able to contribute to astronomy are especially encouraged to apply, including those who can teach one or more of (1) introductory astronomy, (2) observational astronomy, (3) our introduction to astrophysics course, or (4) upper-level astronomy/astrophysics electives aligned with their expertise. Candidates in other areas of physics who can teach across the undergraduate curriculum (e.g., introductory physics, intermediate core courses, or electives in their subfield) are also encouraged to apply. The ideal candidates will demonstrate excellence in undergraduate teaching, a commitment to engaging a wide range of students from different backgrounds and experiences, and the ability to create an inclusive classroom environment in a liberal arts context.

The appointment begins July 1, 2026, with the expectation that new faculty will be on campus in late August 2026 for New Faculty Orientation prior to the start of fall semester classes. A Ph.D. in Physics, Astronomy, Astrophysics, or a closely related field is required by the start date; ABD candidates will be considered. The possibility of visa sponsorship would be discussed with successful candidates and assessed in light of their individual circumstances and institutional considerations.
