Job Description

Globular clusters (GCs) are ubiquitous objects present in galaxies of all masses and environments. Their integrated spectra are an important ingredient in the synthesis of single stellar population models (SSPs), as they serve as basis to reproduce the integrated spectra of old galaxies. However, due to the issue of the age-metallicity degeneracy, it is best to have input data on ages and chemical abundances as close as possible to the range expected to be found on stellar
populations of extragalactic stellar clusters and other galaxies, in order to realistic reproduce their integrated spectra.

This can be achieved by carrying out low to medium-resolution spectroscopy of extragalactic GCs in relatively close galaxies. GCs have a typical integrated magnitude in the range -6 < MV < -8, that is about 5 magnitudes brighter than an individual red giant branch (RGB) star. For a given apparent magnitude, such GCs are thus observable at a 10 times greater distance compared to the brightest RGB stars, which correspond to a factor of 1000 in the accessible volume of space.

The aims of this project are then twofold: to study extragalactic globular clusters and the combination of SSPs so-computed for the study of the integrated spectra of galaxies.

In order to achieve these goals the candidate is required to have experience in low to medium-resolution spectroscopy data reduction of integrated spectra, preferentially with available spectroscopic data for extragalactic GCs in the local neighbourhood. In addition, the position requires experience with stellar population synthesis in the near-infrared. Furthermore, the candidate is expected to have experience in the field of galaxy evolution, statistics and Python programming.
