Job Description

Planetarium Educator (18-Month Position) 

Liberty Science Center (LSC) seeks a part-time Planetarium Educator for a NASA-funded program inspiring students in grades 4–8 through astronomy and space science education. This 18-month role supports afterschool and outreach programming across Hudson County, NJ, while also presenting programs in LSC’s Jennifer Chalsty Planetarium and Weston Family Lab for Earth and Space Exploration.  

Key Responsibilities 

● Deliver NASA-themed afterschool and summer camp programs focused on topics such as the Artemis Mission and James Webb Space Telescope.  

● Operate a portable digital planetarium at schools, youth centers, and outreach events.  

● Train students to create and present their own planetarium shows, including opportunities to present at LSC.  

● Present live planetarium shows, Science on a Sphere programs, and educational experiences for public audiences, school groups, camps, and special events.  

● Operate and maintain audiovisual, telescope, and digital planetarium equipment.  

● Collaborate across departments to support LSC’s mission and audience engagement.  

● Foster inclusive, engaging learning environments for diverse audiences.  

Preferred Qualifications  

● Bachelor’s degree in astronomy, education, theater, STEM, or related field (or equivalent experience).  

● Experience in formal or informal education, afterschool programs, and public presentations.  

● Strong communication and presentation skills.  

● Experience with digital full-dome systems, planetarium operations, telescopes, and educational program development.  

● Familiarity with Zoom, Google Meet, and multimedia editing.  

● Acting or other performance experience is a plus. 

 Schedule & Location 

 Part-time, non-exempt position running January 2026–July 2027. Requires weekday afternoons, some weekends, and onsite work at LSC and Hudson County schools.  

Compensation & Perks 

 $21/hour plus paid time off, free parking, LSC family membership, and employee discounts. Valid driver’s license required for local travel.
