About the Center

Located in Fountain Hills, AZ, The International Dark Sky Discovery Center (IDSDC) is a unique non-profit 501(c)3 organization dedicated to preserving dark skies for the well-being of humans, plants, and animals while opening a window to the observable universe. This world-class, 23,000 sq.ft. facility will offer the following key components:

  • Dark Sky Observatory with the largest telescope in the Greater Phoenix area
  • Hyperspace Planetarium featuring state-of-the-art tilted dome technology
  • Inspiration Theater with 4K projection and 150-tiered seats
  • Night Sky Exhibit Hall with engaging, interactive educational displays
  • Einstein Exploration Station offering hands-on learning experiences and challenges

The IDSDC will serve as an international leader in dark sky education, conservation, and research. We aim to inspire curiosity about the universe, support STEM education, and contribute to the growing field of astrotourism. Our collaborations with Arizona State University, community colleges, and local schools will play a vital role in our educational mission.

Position Overview

The Executive Director (ED) of the International Dark Sky Discovery Center will provide visionary leadership and strategic direction to ensure the Center’s continued growth and success. This position will oversee day-to-day operations, program development, community engagement, fundraising, and financial management while fostering partnerships with local, regional, and national organizations.

IMPORTANT: The ED is a new position with the IDSDC, which is opening in the fall, 2025. The ED will be the first employee hired and expected to work with the board to continue to set up infrastructure leading to the grand opening. Therefore, the individual must be capable of both strategic thinking and hands-on execution.

Key Responsibilities

*Center Operations and Facilities Management* 

  • Ensure effective day-to-day operations, from facility management to vendor coordination. 
  • Implement visitor policies, security measures, and operational workflows. 

*Board Relations* 

  • Work closely with the Board of Directors to ensure effective governance and alignment with strategic goals. 
  • Provide regular updates on progress and challenges. 

*Event Planning and Sales* 

  • Coordinate a grand opening and other major events. 
  • Develop strategies to increase event bookings and maximize revenue. 
  • Analyze event sales performance to identify opportunities for growth. 

*Human Resources/Work Culture* 

  • Recruit, train, and mentor staff and volunteers. 
  • Establish performance metrics and foster a positive, inclusive work environment. 

*Financial/Operations Management* 

  • Oversee budgeting, financial reporting, and auditing. 
  • Develop and maintain internal controls and manage vendor relationships and RFP processes. 
  • Supervise accounting and financial management systems, ensuring accuracy and efficiency. 

*Program Development & Implementation* 

  • Oversee the creation and execution of educational programs, exhibits, outreach initiatives, and public events. 
  • Collaborate with educational institutions to promote dark sky conservation. 
  • Evaluate and report on program effectiveness and impact. 

*Marketing and Outreach* 

  • Drive the implementation of the IDSDC's brand and expand its online presence through social media, websites, and email marketing. 
  • Build relationships with local media and influencers to increase visibility. 

*Community Engagement & Advocacy* 

  • Build and maintain relationships with community leaders and stakeholders. 
  • Advocate for dark sky preservation and promote the importance of reducing light pollution. 
  • Represent the organization at conferences, public events, and in the media. 

*Development and Fundraising* 

  • Identify and pursue diverse funding opportunities, including grants, sponsorships, and donations. 
  • Work closely with the board to plan and engage with prospective funders through tours and meetings.
