Job Description

The Department of Physics and Astronomy (https://pa.as.uky.edu/) in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Kentucky seeks applicants for a postdoctoral research position in the field of observational galaxy formation and evolution. The successful candidate will carry out an active research program in the group of Assistant Professor Ryan Sanders, primarily working on James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) spectroscopic observations of high-redshift galaxies from multiple GO programs. Topics of particular interest include gas-phase chemical abundances, the ionization state of the interstellar medium, star formation, feedback and gas flows, and baryonic mass assembly. The successful candidate is expected to spend part of the time pursuing their own research interests independently.

Candidates must have completed a Ph.D. in Astronomy, Physics, or a closely related field before the position begins. Applicants should provide evidence of the candidate’s ability to work collaboratively in a group environment and carry out an independent research program, and a commitment to contributing to a culture of inclusion, integrity, and cooperation in the department. Candidates with experience and expertise in all areas of extragalactic astronomy are encouraged to apply. While not required, experience in spectroscopic data analysis is highly desirable.

The initial appointment is for two years, with extension for a third year expected contingent on performance and available funding. The position is expected to begin August 1, 2024.

In order to be considered for this position, applicants will need to complete the following two steps:
