Job Description

The School of Earth and Space Exploration (SESE) in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Arizona State University (ASU) invites applicants for Assistant Teaching Professor position.  This is a full-time, benefits-eligible, non-tenure eligible appointment made on a fiscal year basis (July 1 – June 30). Teaching Professors typically teach three classes per academic term, with a modest additional amount of administrative/service work (about 10% of effort).  The anticipated start date is November 2025.

Teaching faculty should have the ability to teach in multiple areas across the astronomy, astrophysics, and planetary science curriculum.  Successful candidates will support the delivery of astronomy, astrophysics, and planetary science courses in SESE, with a focus on courses delivered in an online format, but including immersion (i.e., in-person) courses as dictated by the needs of the school.  Successful candidates will have a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching undergraduate classes. Teaching faculty also contribute to the service mission of SESE programs through student outreach activities, course development, and service on committees.

Qualifications

Essential Functions:

  • Teach courses across multiple areas including astronomy, astrophysics, planetary sciences and related subject matter on an as-needed basis.
  • Teach courses at the undergraduate and/or graduate level, delivered in an online format, but including immersion (i.e., in-person) courses as needed.
  • Demonstrated ability in teaching undergraduate classes.
  • Contribution to the service mission of SESE's programs through student outreach activities, course development, and service on committees.

Required Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. or equivalent degree in astronomy, astrophysics, planetary science, or related discipline by the time of appointment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work, collaborate, and communicate effectively with students, colleagues, community partners, and staff in a multicultural environment.

SESE is a vibrant community that combines the strengths of science, engineering, and education to set the stage for a new era of exploration. Research in SESE includes, but is not limited to, the geology, geophysics, and geochemistry of Earth and other planetary bodies, exploration systems design and instrumentation, exoplanets, astrobiology, astronomy, astrophysics, cosmology, and Earth and space science education. Current SESE participation includes leadership of the NASA Psyche asteroid mission, the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LROC), thermal emission spectrometers on the Mars Odyssey, OSIRIS-REx, Lucy, and upcoming Europa Clipper missions, multiple SmallSats, and the Mastcam and Mastcam-Z imaging investigations on the Curiosity rover and Mars 2020 Perseverance rover, respectively. SESE researchers also have access to multiple ground-based, balloon- and space-based telescopes and instruments for astronomical observations. SESE is a leader in analytical characterization of Earth materials as well as those returned from planetary bodies.
