Job Summary
Cambridge, MA
United States
Job Description
The Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian (CfA) is a joint institution connecting the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) and the Harvard College Observatory (HCO). The CfA is a diverse astrophysical institution at which more than 800 staff and students are engaged in a broad program of research and education in astronomy, astrophysics, and Earth and space sciences. The CfA is at the forefront, internationally, of the scientific exploration of the universe. Our research covers theoretical astrophysics, observational ground and space-based astronomy, engineering and technology development, and education. The research objectives of the CfA are carried out primarily with the support of government, Smithsonian Institution, and Harvard funds, with additional philanthropic support. At the CfA, the next generation of scientific leaders are being trained and mentored through a broad range of undergraduate and graduate student programs, postdoctoral positions and fellowships.
The CfA SPARK program offers a one-year postbaccalaureate research opportunity at the Center for Astrophysics where you will work alongside world-class scientists, contribute to current and on-going research, and develop essential skills in data analysis, numerical modeling, and scientific communication. With personalized mentorship, access to top-tier resources, and opportunities to publish your work, this program is designed to strengthen your graduate school applications and prepare you for a successful career in astrophysics.
Successful applicants will begin on September 1, 2026 with a recommended 9-12 month appointment, depending on personal situations. Over the course of a one-year immersive experience, participants will engage closely with a CfA mentor on a research project, benefitting from training in data analysis, programming, numerical modeling, and scientific communication. This hands-on experience will assist participants in determining whether graduate school is the right path while also enhancing their prospects for admission into advanced degree programs.
SPARK Interns are expected to work at the Center for Astrophysics (Cambridge, MA) for the full duration of the program.
The application will close on April 30, 2026 at 11:59:00 pm, Eastern Daylight Time. All applications received by the deadline will be given full consideration. No late applications will be accepted.
