Postdoctoral Fellowships in Cosmology and Astrophysics at Kavli IPMU
Job Summary
Job Description
The “Kavli Institute for the Physics and Mathematics of the Universe" (Kavli IPMU) is an international research institute in Japan with English as its official language. The goal of the institute is to explore fundamental laws of the Universe from a synergistic perspective of mathematics, physics, and astronomy.
We intend to appoint several postdoctoral fellowship positions in astrophysics and cosmology to 3-year terms. We seek to build a diverse, highly interactive membership, and strongly encourage female and international applicants. Topics of investigation at Kavli IPMU include observational cosmology, galaxy evolution, optical transients (supernova), numerical simulations, quasar studies, high-energy astrophysics, and multi-messenger astronomy. Large computing resources are available at Kavli IPMU and on the national level. Fellows can apply for observing time on facilities available through the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ), including the 8.2m Subaru Telescope, ALMA, Keck and Gemini Telescopes through the Subaru Time Exchange program.
Kavli IPMU is one of the leading institutions of the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) Survey, a 330-night Subaru campaign that started in March 2014. Primary goals include cosmological constraints from weak lensing measured over more than 1000 square degrees, high-z Type Ia supernova, and powerful new statistical measurements of galaxy and AGN evolution at all redshifts. Kavli IPMU is also leading the development of Prime Focus Spectrograph (PFS), a multi-fiber optical/near-infrared spectrograph to be mounted on Subaru, which will conduct a large survey for cosmology (i.e., BAO, neutrino mass), high-z galaxy evolution, IGM/CGM absorption, and Galactic archeology. PFS is expected to start commissioning in 2021 and begin survey operations in early 2023.
The applications should include a CV, research statement, publication list, and at least three letters of recommendation (https://www.ipmu.jp/en/job-opportunities/PD2020). They should be uploaded through AcademicJobsOnline at https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/16759/
The search is open until filled, but for full consideration please submit the application and letters by Dec 1, 2020.
