Job Description

The University of Milan (Italy) invites expressions of interest for multiple postdoctoral positions in planet formation.

Successful candidates will join Prof. Giovanni Rosotti and his new-born group funded by the ERC Starting Grant DiscEvol and by a grant from Fondazione Cariplo. The newly established group focuses on developing theoretical models to be compared with observations coming from the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) and other telescopes. The main research questions consist in identifying which processes drive disc evolution, distinguish whether discs are predominantly turbulent or if their evolution is driven by MHD winds, and in exploiting the use of disc kinematic studies. The group also has a keen interest in disc-planet interaction and measuring the properties of planets embedded in proto-planetary discs. The group has a theoretical focus but it is involved in a numer of large observational efforts, such as the ALMA Large Programmes exoALMA, AGE-PRO and DECO. Candidates with experience in observations and/or theory are welcome to apply. In the broader context of the University of Milan, there are strong synergies with the groups of G. Lodato and S. Facchini, who are also active in the field of planetary formation.

Candidates will have ample opportunities to explore other areas of star and planet formation and will be encouraged to develop independent collaborations. If interested, candidates will have the opportunity to mentor undergraduate and graduate students.

The positions are for 3 years and are expected to start in the Fall of 2024, but the starting date is negotiable. Appointments come with a competitive salary, and generous research and travel budget, as well as extensive access to high-performance computing facilities.

We regard diversity as an asset within a team, and welcome applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences.

Applications should include a CV with a publication list and a three-page research statement covering past and future research interests. These should be sent as a single pdf file to [email protected] by December 22nd, 2023, for full consideration. Candidates should also indicate in the CV the contact details of three referees, who are willing to provide reference letters upon request.

Informal inquiries about the positions are welcome and should be sent to Giovanni Rosotti.
