Job Description

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral research position at the Department of Astronomy/Steward Observatory at the University of Arizona. The postdoctoral researcher will work with Professor David Sand and collaborators on a new Hubble Space Telescope project to successfully identify "failed supernovae" -- the literal disappearance of a massive star after collapse into a black hole -- in nearby galaxies. The successful candidate may also participate in other time domain projects, which include but are not limited to: a) the 12-hour cadence nearby galaxy supernova search, DLT40; b) electromagnetic follow-up of gravitational wave events using a new Arizona-based discovery effort, employing the full suite of Steward Observatory facilities; c) infrastructure efforts to prepare Steward Observatory for rapid and persistent follow-up of transient events in the coming years. The successful candidate will be encouraged to work with other Steward Observatory scientists, including members of the Arizona Transient Exploration and Characterization (AzTEC) team, led by Professor Nathan Smith.

Observational facilities at Steward include the 2x8.4m Large Binocular Telescope, the 6.5m MMT, the twin 6.5m Magellan telescopes, and an assortment of 1-2m class telescopes. Postdocs can apply for time on any Steward facility directly as PI, and will be encouraged to do so. Steward is also immersed in one of the richest astronomical research environments in the world.

The position is for 2 years, renewable for a third year. Candidates must have completed all requirements for a Ph.D. in physics, astronomy, or a related field before the commencement of the position in Summer or Fall 2019. Experience with Hubble Space Telescope imaging and/or time domain image analysis techniques are desired, but all interested applicants should apply. The appointment may be started earlier if mutually agreed. To apply, in addition to submitting a UACareers application, please send a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and a statement of research interests to [email protected]. Please arrange three letters of recommendation to be sent to the same email address as well. All applicants must also apply online at to Posting Number P20722.
