Job Description

The Astronomy Department at Indiana University invites applications for a two-year Visiting Assistant Professor position to begin in August 2025.  We seek an individual with expertise in astronomy or astrophysics who is committed to excellence in teaching at the undergraduate level. The candidate will teach two courses per semester; assigned courses will generally be at the general education level but could include courses at any level in our curriculum. For applicants considering academic positions focused on teaching at the undergraduate level, the position offers the opportunity to develop strong teaching skills in a collaborative environment and to gain experience mentoring undergraduate research.  A Ph.D. is required at the time of appointment. H1-B sponsorship is not available for this position.

Applicants should submit applications by email to [email protected], including a cover letter, a CV, statement on teaching, and a statement of research interests. Applicants should also request three letters of recommendation be sent to the same email address. Applications completed by 3 March 2025 will receive full consideration. Questions about the application process can also be sent to [email protected].

Previous teaching experience is strongly preferred but not a requirement. The search is open to applicants from any area of astronomy or astrophysics.  We are particularly interested in candidates whose research complements and enhances current department strengths, who are committed to effective classroom teaching, and who can contribute to a collegial, welcoming, and vibrant department. The successful candidate will be encouraged to participate fully in the scholarly life of the department and will have access to all available research facilities including the WIYN 3.5-m Observatory and IU’s outstanding high-performance research computing facilities.
