Job Description

Combining our leading space research with Industrial Experience

The School of Physical Sciences at the Open University, UK, offers two full-time fully funded PhD studentships in space technology development and its applications to astronomy, to start in October 2024, for 3.5 years.

  • Radiation damage in detectors: what really happens to silicon imaging detectors in orbit? [SI1] with Te2v: led by Dr David Hall
  • Spotting Ice! (SPICE): infrared light-field tracking of icy particles [A2] with Dynamic Imaging Analytics Ltd: led by Dr Helen Fraser

Applications are welcomed from candidates with a strong academic record in Physics, Engineering or Space Science, evidenced by a MSc, Masters or MEng at 2:1 or above, with some research project experience.

It would be an advantage in all these projects (but not required) to have experience with some of the following; optics, photonics, image sensors and filters, radiation systems, vacuum systems, temperature control, detector technology (visible and IR), programming with Matlab, Python, and / or Jetson Xavier processors.
