Job Description

Leiden Observatory invites applications for a PhD position on theoretical and computational astrophysical studies of Tidal Disruption Events (TDEs). The PhD position is under the main supervision of Prof. Elena M. Rossi’s group, which currently consists of five PhD students and one post-doc, who work on various galactic nuclei phenomena.

This 4-year position targets candidates with a strong passion and background in numerical and theoretical research. Depending on the candidate’s expertise and interests, the project may involve radiative hydrodynamical simulations or dynamical calculations for rate predictions. The ultimate goal is to apply theoretical models to upcoming VRO/LSST data and unlock the potential of TDEs to discover and study massive black holes in quiescent (small) galaxies. The project will benefit from Leiden Observatory’s leading role in TDE observations and its strong involvement in VRO/LSST TDE discoveries. The position is funded by Rossi’s grant awarded within the NWO Vici scheme.

The successful candidate must have a Master or a combined Bachelor and Master degree in Astronomy or in Physics with specialisation in Astronomy by the starting date. The starting date is 1st of September 2026.

Leiden Observatory, founded in 1633, is the oldest university astronomy department in the world, and it is ranked the 7th best Space Science Department in the world, and first outside the USA. With about 35 faculty, over 60 postdoctoral associates and about 80 PhD students, it is one of the largest and most international astronomy departments in the world. Leiden is a charming university town with an international flair. Most English is the common language at the Institute and in town.
