Job Description

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Position in the FEEDBACK SOFIA Legacy Program: a ~100 hour observational program to use the upGREAT instrument on SOFIA to study the radiative and mechanical interaction of massive stars with their environment. More specifically, the candidate will reduce, analyze and interpret large scale [CII] 1.9 THz (157μm) maps in a broad sample of sources. Particular care will be given to quantifying the dynamics, kinetics and energetics of atomic and CO-dark molecular gas. The candidate will work closely with Mark Wolfire, Marc Pound, and Xander Tielens.

The successful candidate will have a background in studies of the interstellar medium of the Galaxy, a track record in observational or theoretical studies on the interaction of massive stars with their environment, and substantial experience in handling heterodyne data,

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Physics, Astronomy, or a related field by the start date of the appointment. A Fall 2019 start date is envisaged, but earlier dates are also possible and the appointment term is 2 years, with a third year expected but contingent on continued NASA funding. To apply, please send a letter of interest including a statement of research interest and a detailed resume listing qualifications, experience, and  publication list in PDF format to [email protected] by March 15, 2019. Candidates must also arrange for three letters of recommendation to be sent to the same e-mail address by this date. For further information, please contact Xander Tielens at [email protected].
