Job Description

Applications are invited for a 3-year postdoctoral researcher funded by the Academy of Finland to work with Dr. Rubina Kotak in the area of supernovae and related transients at the University of Turku (UTU).

The UTU transients team is a vibrant and productive research group within the Dept. of Physics & Astronomy, and currently comprises 17 members with diverse expertise. UTU members lead key science projects in several large international consortia with access to guaranteed observing time e.g., the Son of X-Shooter instrument and the NOT Transient Explorer. Access to other facilities is guaranteed via national or institutional support e.g., European Southern Observatory, the Nordic Optical Telescope (co-owned by UTU), and the Gravitational-wave Optical Transient Observer (GOTO).

The successful applicant will be expected to support and participate in ongoing projects and lead new ones. Depending on the skills and interests of the applicant, this may include discovery and survey operations, acquisition and analysis of large multi-wavelength datasets, and/or modelling and interpretation of observations.

The applicant should either have previous experience in observations of transients, or related modelling / theoretical expertise. Additionally, the candidate must hold, or be about to obtain, a PhD in astronomy or a related discipline by the agreed starting date, have an excellent publication record, and demonstrate independence in their research.

The position can be filled immediately, and a 1-year extension may be possible. We welcome and encourage applicants from under-represented minorities and diverse backgrounds.

Applications should be in English, and must include the following: CV, list of publications, and a statement of research interests (max. 2 pages). Applicants should also arrange for 2 letters of reference to be sent directly to [email protected] by the closing date. Applications should be submitted via the electronic form linked below.

Turku is an internationally diverse city with a vibrant cultural scene, easy access to the stunning archipelago, and a stone’s throw from other Finnish and Nordic research institutes. Finland boasts a high standard of living and excellent provision of healthcare and childcare. Further information on living in Finland can be found in the links below.
