We present a new high dynamic-range image of the nucleus and parsec-scale radio jet of the quasar 3C 273 at 18~cm wavelength. The combined MERLIN and global VLBI observation in May 1993 comprised the largest number, by far, of individual telescopes used in a single observation -- a total of 28 telescopes in USA, Europe, South Africa, Russia, Australia, and China. This was one of the last experiments to take advantage of the wide availability of (narrow-band) MkII-format record terminals. Our preliminary VLBI image will be compared with maps from 1986 and 1988 in which we detected superluminal motion a projected distance of at least 120 pc from the nucleus. Four MERLIN telescopes recorded VLBI data in parallel, so we have baselines in common which will help with calibration of the combined VLBI and MERLIN datasets. The combined image will enable us to follow the jet emission continuously on scales from 4 millarcsec (7~pc) all the way out to the well-known 20-arcsecond jet.
