The long-awaited first image of the Milky Way's central supermassive black hole, captured by the planet-spanning Event Horizon Telescope, illuminates the nature of the gravitational behemoth at the center of our galaxy. This work marks the first visual confirmation that the object is indeed a black hole and provides a valuable test of our theories of gravity. The exciting first results of this international endeavor are published in a Focus Issue of the Astrophysical Journal Letters, and you can read a concise summary of the findings in our AAS Nova highlight.
