Be FAMOUS at Astronomy on Tap NYC!
GREETINGS AoTNYC! The American Astronomical Society (AAS) thanks everyone for their engagement with the astronomical sciences and all things space!
While you attend the event, enjoy an adult beverage or two, and consider the mysteries of the universe, we invite you to donate to the Society's FAMOUS Travel Grants Program. The clever, astronomer-derived "FAMOUS" acronym stands for Funds for Astronomical Meetings: Outreach to Underrepresented Scientists. The money raised offers opportunities for our colleagues from historically underrepresented groups to attend AAS meetings. FAMOUS Travel Grants allow these members, such as scientists at small colleges, minority, LGBTQIA+, non-traditional, and veteran students and astronomers, to overcome financial challenges so that they can join us at our semiannual gatherings. Stipends up to $1,000 are awarded to offset expenses for travel, meals, and lodging.
Since its inception in 2014, 130 stipends for a total of $90,000 have been awarded. In 2019, the AAS provided travel support to 37 scientists for the winter and summer meetings. At our most recent in-person meeting in January 2020, the AAS received 136 FAMOUS grant applications but could only fully fund travel for 20 scientists. Please support us and help our future FAMOUS grantees by making a donation to the program.
The AAS is a 501(c)3 nonprofit corporation, and all donations by US taxpayers are deductible under section 170 of the IRS Code. The AAS will automatically issue letters for donations of $100 or more. Federal Tax ID# 21-0735173.
