Last week, the House of Representatives and the White House reached a compromise supplemental funding bill that includes money for science. If this becomes law, it is a major victory for science groups, as the debate about the supplemental has focused on a variety of issues including education benefits for veterans, general controversy surrounding war funding, and presidential veto threats over the amount of domestic spending in the bill.

The Space Studies Board of the National Academies is having their final event of the "Forging the Future of Space Science: The Next 50 Years" seminar series. The final event is an all-day Colloquium on June 26 in Washington, DC.

Louisiana Antievolution Bill Passes Senate

The Louisiana Senate has approved a bill that would allow teachers to teach unscientific views on evolution, global warming, and other scientific subjects. The Senate bill has to be reconciled with a similar but slightly more scientifically acceptable bill in Louisiana's House.

Summary: The President released the FY 2009 budget on Monday, February 4. The news for science is good. The American Competitiveness Initiative is supported and the poor appropriations provided for Congress are compensated for in the President's request. It is now the responsibility of the science community to convince Congress to either appropriate the requested amounts or improve upon these baseline numbers.
