AAS ACTION ALERT 2003-05

Senate Appropriations Committee Votes to Eliminate the Space Environment Center

On 5 September the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee passed a bill that would eliminate all funding in fiscal year 2004 for NOAA's Space Environment Center (SEC) in Boulder, Colorado. In July the House of Representatives passed their version of the bill that cut SEC funding to $5.2 million, 40% below the FY02
levels and below the President's request of $8.3 million. Once the full Senate passes the bill, which might occur very shortly, a conference committee will meet to forge a final bill for the President's signature. Unless key legislators hear from concerned scientists soon urging Congress to fund the program at the
President's request, the SEC will likely face a severe cut or complete elimination from NOAA's budget.
