Manuscript Instructions for Annual Observatory ReportsAnnual Reports of Astronomy Departments and Observatories are no longer being published in the BAAS. Manuscript Instructions for ObituariesAn annual compilation of obituaries of Society members is published in the BAAS. This is done both as a tribute and for future historians of science. The AAS Obituary Committee is responsible for commissioning and compiling the obituaries. The AAS Obituary Committee depends entirely on the network of astronomical colleagues, including astronomy department and observatory administrators, for notification when an astronomer has died. To inform us of the death of an astronomer or to volunteer to write the obituary of a colleague please contact the current Vice-Chair of the Historical Astronomy Division or Crystal Tinch (tinch@aas.org). Manuscript Instructions for Research PapersSubmissions of manuscripts dealing with the administrative or sociological aspects of modern astronomy are accepted at anytime during the year. All submissions will be peer-reviewed. The publishing cycle of the BAAS changes each year. The cycle is built to accommodate publishing Meeting Programs for the AAS and its Divisions. After Sociology papers complete the review process, they will be published in the next available issue. Papers will also be posted on the electronic version of the BAAS in PDF format. Access to the electronic version of the BAAS is not limited by subscription. Page charges are $82/page. Reprints may be ordered. BAAS Editorial Office Reports must be submitted electronically in AASTeX format, following these instructions. Composing Your ReportThe general structure of a scholarly paper to be submitted to the BAAS should conform to the standards established by the other AAS Journals, including those for numbering figures, tables and equations and for identifying references. Manuscripts should be arranged in the following order:
Preparing an Electronic ManuscriptElectronic manuscripts are LaTeX article files that use the baasar.sty style file. Manuscripts are submitted electronically to the BAAS Editorial Office for the review process. Completed manuscripts are sent electronically from the AAS to the the American Institute of Physics (AIP) to produce the pages of the published Journal. baasar.sty is the BAAS Technical Report LaTeX style file and includes the macros for journal definitions and miscellaneous items like arcsec. Please use the macros supplied in the style file; we cannot accept author-defined macros. A main goal of TeX-tagged electronic manuscripts is that they can be uniformly converted into future electronic platforms. TeX is not just for typesetting anymore. Cleanly tagged files will insure that future generations will have access to your report. A User's Guide and sample report are also available. baasman.tex User's Guide for BAAS style file (uses baasar.sty). Contact aastex-help@aas.org with LaTeX markup questions. Submitting an Electronic PaperSend LaTeX manuscripts by email to johnson@aas.org or by post to the BAAS Editorial Office. You may use only TarZ or zip if you wish to compress your report. MAC compression is not supported. Please name the LaTeX files something obvious, a key word from the title or the authors last name: Manuscript -- modern.tex (e.g. if the paper is titled Modern Astronomy) Please make sure each of the above .tex files is self-contained, i.e., DO NOT use the \include or \input command or reference local files or pathnames.
Reviewing the GalleysOnce your manuscript has been laid out, you will receive a xerox of the manuscript (a galley) from AIP.
