AAS Press Services

Relations with the news media on science topics are handled by the AAS Press Officer, Dr. Rick Fienberg (+1 202-328-2010 x116), assisted by Deputy Press Officers Inge Heyer and Prof. Larry Marschall. The Press Officers respond to media inquiries by providing referrals to suitable experts, suggesting story topics and illustration sources, and recommending scientists who are effective communicators on radio and television.

The Press Officer is responsible for all media arrangements at meetings and all AAS public-information activities concerning the science of astronomy, as distinct from issues of public policy. AAS Divisions, including DPS, HEAD, and SPD, also appoint press officers who facilitate media coverage of their respective Divisional meetings and awards.

AAS Press-Release-Distribution Service

Astronomy-related press releases from authorized representatives of universities, observatories, government agencies, scientific societies, and other organizations are forwarded by e-mail to the AAS press list of more than 1,700 reporters, editors, broadcasters, and institutional press officers who regularly cover astronomy and space science.

To subscribe to the AAS press-release-distribution service, for which there is no charge, please send an e-mail to press-list@aas.org with your name, media affiliation, mailing address, e-mail address, and phone, fax, and mobile numbers. Only accredited journalists and public information officers are eligible to receive press releases forwarded by the AAS. You may unsubscribe at any time by replying to that effect to any press release we forward to you.

We also distribute links to press releases via our Twitter account @AAS_Press.

AAS Meeting Media Services

The AAS offers complimentary meeting registration to bona fide working journalists and public-information officers. (See our eligibility criteria.) Qualified media representatives should not complete the regular meeting registration form; instead, contact AAS Press Officer Dr. Rick Fienberg to request complimentary press registration.

During meetings we operate a press room with working space, telephones, fax, photocopier, printer, power strips, and Internet connectivity for reporters. Each registered journalist will have a mailbox there to receive press releases and other materials. A nearby room will provide quiet space for one-on-one interviews and for journalists recording or editing podcasts.

Press conferences are held in an auditorium equipped with a sound system, mult-box, and TV lights as well as Internet connectivity. Briefings are available to offsite reporters by means of telephone conference calls, which carry the audio and accommodate reporters’ questions, and by near-real-time slidecasts, which webcast the speakers’ PowerPoint slides. A list of press conferences, along with detailed instructions on how to gain remote access to them, is e-mailed to reporters on our press list and posted on the AAS website shortly before each meeting.

Access to AAS Journals for Reporters

Qualified journalists may apply for access to the electronic editions of The Astrophysical Journal and The Astronomical Journal through the EurekAlert! service of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Complimentary press subscriptions will be granted upon accreditation by the AAAS as a EurekAlert! registered user and subsequent approval by the AAS. This service is not available to freelancers who are substantially employed in astronomy or related fields.
