A Substitution on the AAS Council

George Benedict

Mercedes Richards (Pennsylvania State University) won a spot on the AAS Council in the 2015 election and began her term this past summer, but she has had to step down for personal reasons.

Following the procedures outlined in the AAS Constitution and Bylaws, the Executive Committee has appointed Nancy Chanover (New Mexico State University) to serve out the remainder of Richards's term as Councilor.

Chanover is an associate professor in the NMSU Department of Astronomy. She studies planetary atmospheres via ground-based visible and infrared imaging and spectroscopy, often in support of NASA planetary-exploration missions. She also serves as principal investigator for NASA's Planetary Data System (PDS) Atmospheres Node, teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in astronomy and planetary science, and will be coordinating a pilot Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program for the Sloan Digital Sky Survey next summer.

Welcome to the Council, Nancy!
