1. THE SEARCH FOR A NEW EDITOR-IN-CHIEF FOR THE ASTROPHYSICAL JOURNAL BEGINS

The AAS Publications Board and AAS Council have constituted a Search Committee to find a successor to Helmut Abt as Editor-in-Chief of the Astrophysical Journal. A new search is necessary following the resignation of Paul Joss as Editor-in-Chief-elect last fall. Helmut has kindly agreedto assist in the search process as well as to continue as Editor-in-Chief for up to another two years.

Further information about the search process will appear in the next regular issue of the AAS Newsletter, and the position description will appear in the AAS Job Register (see No. 9947) and Physics Today. You may also refer to http://www.aas.org/comms/apjsearch.html for background information and the position description.

The Search Committee is soliciting both applications and nominations of candidates from the AAS membership at large. The committee is looking for candidates who are broad and accomplished scientists, have excellent reputations and unquestioned integrity, who are objective, fair, and tactful (and who will be PERCEIVED as such by the community), who can manage the editorship functions well (including coordination of the Scientific Editors), and who will help set the course for the continued evolution of The Journal, particularly in
the area of electronic publishing. People with an interest in the position, or who wish to nominate colleagues they believe are qualified for the position, are invited to contact the chair of the committee. Any questions concerning the position or the search process may be addressed to the chair or to any member of the Search Committee. Applications and nominations are due by 1 May.

Chair, ApJ Editor-in-Chief Search Committee
