AAS Action Alert 2004-5

Kevin B. Marvel, Deputy Executive Officer

Summary

AAS Members are asked to review the list of signers and non -signers to the FY 2005 NSF “Dear Colleague” letter currently circulating in the House of Representatives and if their member of Congress is a non-signer, to contact their office and ask that they sign onto the “Dear Colleague” letter. If your member of Congress has signed on, please send them a short thank-you letter for supporting NSF.

Background

So-called “Dear Colleague” letters are circulated among members of Congress to inform each other of key issues and to build support for particular policy concerns.

This year Congressman Ehlers (R-MI) and Congressman Holt (D-NJ) are circulating such a letter advocating for increased funding for the NSF in FY 2005.

The letter is available at: www.aas.org/policy/EhlersHolt.pdf

To build support for an issue, a significant fraction of the members of the House must sign onto the letter. Currently, 130 members have signed on, compared to 156 who signed onto a similar letter last year. Particularly absent are large numbers of Republican signers.

Requested Action

AAS members are asked to review the lists below, determine if their member of Congress has signed on or not, and if not, contact their office an ask them to sign onto the Holt-Ehlers NSF "Dear Colleague" letter for FY 2005.

Contact information for offices (please call or FAX as the deadline for signatures is June 7) can be found using the AAS Zip-to-It feature available at this link: www.aas.org/policy/aas.bios.html

Please note however, that members of the appropriations committees do not sign onto this kind of "Dear Colleague" letter. Be sure your member of Congress is not on an appropriations committee before contacting their office.
