  • Networking on the Network: A Guide to Professional Skills for PhD Students An excellent document aimed at teaching new PhDs how to get tenure and do well in their field. Almost all of the advice applies to all of us regardless of where we work or what we do.
  • Anything by Tom Peters. Especially interesting and filled with ideas is Brand You 50 on how to be unique in business, but it applies to any career.
  • Ask the Headhunter by Nick A. Corcodilos. Describes how headhunters (Job Placement Experts) think and do their job. He explains how you can do it yourself. Also look at the Ask the Headhunter website.
  • Never Eat Alone by Keith Ferazzi explains how to network by someone who seems to know everyone. This is really the best way to find a job, through contacts.
  • The Scientist as Consultant: Building New Career Opportunities by Carl J. Sinderman and Thomas K. Sawyer. A how-to book on learning to be a scientific consultant. I read this and it was good. This is useful if you are perhaps not fully-funded or looking to transition away from academia. This can also work if you are geographically constrained (can't move for a job).
  • Alternate Careers in Science: Leaving the Ivory Tower edited by Cynthia Robbins-Roth. Each chapter covers a different career track.
  • Career Renewal by Stephen Rosen and Celia Paul. A guide for successful career transition written for scientists and engineers.
