Observations taken with the SPEAR Mission have provided the first far ultraviolet (FUV) spectral imaging-survey of large fractions of the sky. Diffuse FUV cosmic radiation is concentrated where both hot stars and scattering dust coexist, e.g. in the Galactic plane, young stellar associations, and the Magellanic clouds. We have detected and discovered prominent emission lines from hot and warm ionized gas, as well as from H2 fluorescence, in the general ISM. FUV emission from hot gas has been observed in young, nearby SNR, evolved SNR and superbubbles. Diffuse H2 fluorescence is ubiquitous across the Galaxy.
