[54.10] The Angular Separation of the Components of Cepheid Binary AW Per

D. Massa (SGT, Inc.), N.R. Evans (SAO)

The 6.4 day classical Cepheid AW Per is a spectroscopic binary with a period of 40 years and a B star secondary. Employing a cross dispersion imaging technique developed by Massa & Endal (1987), we have used HST STIS observations to determine the angular separation of the binary components. Unfortunately, we only have the separation for a single epoch. Had STIS survived, we could have determined the inclination of the system from additional measurements. Together with a spectroscopic solution of this SB2, the additional measurements would have given the inclination of the system and, hence, a direct estimate of its distance and the masses of its components.

We thank STScI, which is operated by the AURA, under NASA contract NAS 5-26555 for support.
