[20.04] Eigenmode Analysis of Magnetorotational Instability in Liquid Metal Couette Flow

K. Noguchi (T-CNLS, LANL), V. I. Pariev (Dept. of Phys. & Ast. Univ. of Rochester), S. A. Colgate (T-6, LANL)

The magnetorotational instability(MRI) is the most promising process to explain the outward angular momentum transfer in magnetized accretion disks. We study MRI in a rotating metal annulus (Couette flow) via eigenmode analysis for a liquid sodium experiment at the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology and a plasma experiment at LANL. A local stability analysis shows the possibility of observing magnetic field enhancement in both experiments1.

A global structure of the unstable MRI mode, however, should be studied by eigenmode analysis. The difficulty arises from the finite viscosity and magnetic diffusivity, which leads us to solve five second order equations simultaneously in the radial direction2. We show axisymmetric and non-axisymmetric unstable MRI eigenmodes calculated by our newly developed code, and the concentration of the mode near the inner boundary, corresponding to the initial value analysis2.
