[116.06] Spectroscopic Properties of the KISS Emission-Line Galaxies

We present a detailed description of the spectroscopic properties of the emission-line galaxies (ELGs) listed in the first KPNO International Spectroscopic Survey (KISS) catalog. To date 758 of 1128 (67%) of the KISS ELGs from the first list of H\alpha-selected galaxies have been observed in our program of follow-up spectroscopy. This large dataset of homogeneously-selected star-forming galaxies and AGNs allows us to parameterize the constituents of the survey as well as to apply the full KISS ELG sample to address a number of interesting problems.

In the current paper we focus on illustrating the make-up of the KISS catalog of ELGs. We present several example spectra to show the range of activity types present in the survey (e.g., Seyferts, starburst nucleus galaxies, blue compact dwarfs, QSOs). We show emission-line diagnostic diagrams for all observed ELGs, and break down the survey by activity type. We also evaluate the properties of the ELGs (e.g., luminosity, color, redshift, emission-line strength, etc.) for the survey as a whole and for each activity type. Finally, we compare the characteristics of the KISS ELGs measured from the coarse objective-prism survey spectra -- redshift, line equivalent width, and line flux -- with the corresponding values obtained from the higher resolution follow-up spectra.
