[115.03] Mass Outflow in the Narrow-Line Region of Seyfert Galaxies I. Kinematic Models

We present kinematic models of the emission-line gas in the narrow-line region (NLR) of Seyfert galaxies. The models were generated for comparison with spectra obtained by the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS), and concentrate on the inner NLR (< 1 kpc), where the dynamical effects of the central supermassive black hole dominate. We have calculated models with disk and biconical geometries at various inclination angles, and investigate the effects of different velocity laws and emissivity distributions on the radial velocities. We show the results of these models in the form of two-dimensional velocity maps, simulated spectra, and radial velocity curves. Comparison of the models with STIS observations of nearby Seyfert galaxies indicates that the kinematics of the inner NLR are dominated by radial outflow, rather than gravitational motions around the black hole. Detailed comparisons with STIS spectra of NGC 1068 and NGC 4151 are given in a companion poster.
