[63.01] Cosmic Chemical Evolution

This talk will review recent efforts to determine global averages of the major constituents of galaxies as functions of redshift up to z = 5, including stars, interstellar gas, heavy elements, and dust, as well as the radiation emitted by galaxies at wavelengths from 0.1 micron to a millimeter. These quantities are related by a coupled set of equations, called the equations of cosmic chemical evolution. The solutions of these equations provide new insights into the formation and evolution of galaxies and their interaction with the intergalactic medium.
